Steelers player Juju Smith Schuster poses with NSIS staff

NSIS students started their winter break by throwing pies in their teachers’ faces this afternoon! This event was a result of a charity project that “the Kindness Committee” organized at NSIS. The Kindness Committee consists of Principal Dr. Abbondanza, guidance counselor Mrs. Kyle, fifth grade mathematics/science teacher Mrs. Snyder and sixth grade reading teacher Mr. Sharpnack.

They organized the school-wide donation drive for patients receiving treatment at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Washington, PA. An approved list of items was given to students for the drive that ran from December 10th to December 19th.  Students donated items such as blankets, pillows, hats, scarves, puzzle books, and water bottles.  These items will be distributed to patients receiving treatment at the facility.  Students could also donate money, which will be used to purchase gift cards that will also be distributed to patients.

“Our hope is that these items bring smiles and joy to those battling cancer during the holiday and winter season” says Mr. Sharpnack.

For each donated item and/or dollars donated, students received tickets for the Pie-in-the-Face Assembly, which was held this afternoon.  The tickets were then put into envelopes that represented the teachers and staff at NSIS that have volunteered to be hit with pies.  Teachers pulled tickets during the event and those lucky chosen students pied that teacher in front of the student body. JuJu Smith-Schuster even appeared as a special guest and received some pies in the face and pied some of the students as well!

NSIS packaged 26 boxes of items (definitely over 1,000 items altogether) and collected $600 worth of gift cards that will also be distributed to the patients at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Congratulations to NSIS on this fantastic display of community service and exemplifying the true spirit of the season!
