On Wednesday, October 5 Canon-McMillan High School students filled their gymnasium for a special guest speaker. Former professional basketball player Mr. Chris Herren was there to speak to students about his struggle with drugs and alcohol throughout his life.
Students were first shown a video about his story. The video included interviews of his coaches and teammates and the various newspaper headlines that indicated how the drugs negatively impacted his life. Mr. Herron also detailed different conversations he had with students where he gave his talks. These students had a parent or family member that were struggling with drugs and alcohol. Mr. Herron expressed that if he can reach just one student at Canon-McMillan High School that may be secretly struggling with drugs and alcohol in some way to change then he felt he was successful.
Canon-McMillan High School thanks Jeffrey's Drug Store and The Canon-McMillan Horizon Foundation for helping to bring Mr. Herron to speak to their students about his important message. This talk was in memory of Shawn Nairn, the district thanks his family for their donation as well. Canon-McMillan High School also reminded students that if they are struggling their principals and counselors are always available to them to help in whatever they may be struggling with.
