The Waters of McMurray hosted a Veterans Day Writing Contest for CMS eighth graders. The students were asked to write an essay on the topic, "My Pledge to Veterans." The eighth grade English and Social Studies teachers chose the top two essays from each team and submitted them to a team of fifteen veterans who reside at The Waters. That group then voted on the top two finalists, who will receive gift cards.

Eighth grade English Teacher Mrs. Tookey is very proud of all of the students who participated,

"Our students at CMS were so excited to have the chance to thank and honor veterans through the writing contest. Being able to personally address those who have sacrificed for our country is something they did not take lightly. The 8th grade English and Social Studies teachers were all so proud of the pledges that all of the students made, not just the finalists'. Many students made personal connections to veterans in their own families, so to see them have the opportunity to share their respect and admiration for all veterans was really something special. What's even more special is that this group of students will be the ones who carry out these pledges. We were so happy to be given the opportunity to interact with the veterans during the awards ceremony. To personally thank these veterans and express our gratitude is something for which CMS is incredibly grateful!"

The six finalists (two from each team) were:

  • Ella Shields
  • Kiley Robertson (winner)
  • Olivia Dopson
  • Aurora Shirdon
  • Nina Stella
  • Kiara Pugh

They were even featured on KDKA, found here and WPXI found here.

Congratulations to all!
