There is a good chance the PIAA will sponsor girls wrestling within the next year or two. But there is already a state championship for girls.

The fifth annual MyHouse girls high school state championships were held Sunday at Central Dauphin High School High School, and two wrestlers from WPIAL schools won titles.

Canon-McMillan’s Valarie Solorio won the 100-pound championship while North Allegheny’s Leyna Rumpler won the 148-pound title.

Solorio was one of three Canon-McMillan wrestlers who made it to the finals and that was the reason the Big Macs won the team title. While Solorio finished first, Elizabeth Elliott and Natalie Rush placed second. Three other teammates placed among the top eight in their weight class.

Solorio, a junior who was seeded No. 1, won the 100-pound title by pinning South Western's Natalie Hardy, the defending champion, in 47 seconds in the title match. It was her fourth consecutive pin in the 20-girl bracket.

Elliott, a senior, was a surprise finalist after placing fourth in last week's Western Regional qualifier. Elliott recorded four victories on her way to the 112-pound finals, incuding a 4-1 win over Butler's Ana Malovich, the No. 2 seed, in the semifinals. In the title match, she dropped a 7-6 decision to J.P. McCaskey's Journie Rodriquez, who was making her second appearance in the finals.

Rush, a sophomore who was seeded No. 1 at 190 pounds, was pinned by Quakertown's Caroline Hattala at 3:23 of the title match. Rush, a bronze medalist last year, posted three victories to earn a berth in the finals.

North Allegheny’s Rumpler, a junior, made her second appearance in the finals and claimed her first title by pinning Carlisle's Katelyn Coldren at 4:25. It's was Rumpler's fourth consecutive pin in the 20-girl bracket.

One of the highlights of the championships came in the 118-pound division, which featured Northwestern's Sierra Chiesa, who earlier in the week became the first girl to qualify and participate in the PIAA boys championships. She posted a 2-2 record in the Class 2A 107-pound weight class at the boys tournament.

At the girls tournament, Chiesa recorded four consecutive pins to win the title. It was her second girls state title. In the title match, Chiesa pinned another returning champion, Savannah Witt of Palisades, at 4:51.

Chiesa was one of three returning champs who won another title. The others were Bishop McCort's Jordyn Fouse and Kennett's Haylie Jaffe.

Fouse won her second title by pinning Northwestern's Joelle Scott in the 130-pound final. Jaffe claimed her second gold medal with 24-9 technical fall of Saegertown's Kacie Mook in the 136-pound final.

Last month, the PIAA approved, on a first reading basis, sponsoring girls wrestling. It must pass two more votes, but that appears to be a mere formality.

Here are the complete results of the MyHouse championships.
