Different schools from Canon-McMillan School District hosted teams in the Kids of STEEL race portion of the Pittsburgh Marathon, sponsored by Chick-fil-A, on the first weekend in May 2023. Some schools had weekly practices after school and others did not. Some of the intermediate buildings, for example, hosted practices during Exploratory Time before the event in Pittsburgh. The kids who participated worked to run at least 25 miles over the course of the training and then came together to do the last mile in Pittsburgh at the Kids Marathon hosted on Saturday, May 6th of the Marathon Weekend.
"It is a fun way to get kids moving and families to exercise together. Students get to experience the excitement of the start line and finish line of a race." Principal Balch of Wylandville Elementary said.
Lots of local celebrities cheered them on as well including the Pittsburgh Pierogies, Ice Burgh, the Pirate Parrot, and the Chic-fil-A cow.
