Dear Canon-McMillan School District Parents/Guardians and Staff,
The school district appreciates your patience and understanding as we navigate this constantly changing environment. When guidance, mandates, and / or legislation changes, we will notify the community as soon as possible about the impacts it has on our school operations.
After the district email was sent on Friday, September 3, the Pennsylvania Department of Education updated its guidance for K-12 Schools. Based on that new guidance and it’s review by the district’s legal counsel, the following changes will be implemented regarding exceptions in Section 3 of the Order. The District must require any parent / guardian asking for their child to be exempted from wearing a mask for medical, mental health, or disability reasons to provide pertinent medical documentation as evidence of the need for exception. Once submitted, the child’s principal or designee will contact the parent to begin the process for a section 504 Plan.
For any parent who has already submitted a request for an exception, building principals will be following up with you regarding necessary documentation and next steps in the process.
During this formal process to determine whether an exception should be made, your child will be required to wear a mask while in school.
Canon-McMillan School District understands and recognizes that there are different views on the Mask Mandate but, per the Pennsylvania Department of Education and our legal review, there are no convenient and voluntary ways to opt out of adhering to the terms of the Department of Health’s masking mandate.
