Dear Canon-McMillan School District Parents/Guardians and Staff,

There was a Board of School Directors agenda meeting on October 21, 2021 and a voting meeting on October 28, 2021. Here are some updates that were mentioned as recognition items:

  • Congratulations are in order for our Director of Special Education, Becky Lieb.  Becky  recently completed the Pennsylvania Fellowship Program for Special Education Leaders. This year-long program was provided on behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education, and the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) and was designed to build the knowledge and skills of special education leaders to lead special education services and supports to ensure success for all students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

  • Long-term school directors, who have served eight years and up, are being honored across the state by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.  The following board members are recognized for their longevity, dedication, and commitment to the betterment of the Canon-McMillan School District:  Zeffie Carroll for 12 years of service, Manuel Pihakis for 20 years of service, and Darla Bowman-Monaco, previous board member, for 12 years of service.  

  • Congratulations to the Canon-McMillan Schools that ranked in US News' Best Schools Rankings out of 1607 schools in PA:

  • 53rd South Central Elementary School

  • 70th Hills-Hendersonville Elementary

  • 219th Muse Elementary School

  • 257th Wylandville Elementary School

  • 314th Cecil Intermediate School

Canonsburg Middle School ranked in the top 30% of middle schools in the state of Pennsylvania with a ranking of 58 out of 877 schools:

  • 58th Canonsburg Middle School

  • WQED - Indoor Recess Craft Sets / Library Books / School Supplies -Valued at $1000.00

  • Pittsburgh Chapter-National Tooling and Manufacturing Foundation and the EQT Foundation - Supplies for building robots for BOTS-IQ Competitions - Check for $250.00

The October 21 Agenda School Board meeting  included a number of updates and reports. District administrators that included: Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Scott Chambers, Director of Human Resources, Mr. Tim McCullough, Director of Facilities and Transportation, Mr. Jurdon Maier, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Mrs. Grace Lani and Director of Business and Finance, Ms. Joni Mansmann, all gave their own reports and updates as well. Mr. Chambers provided an update about COVID-19 statistics and trends as well as his plan to create Crisis Teams within each school building. Mr. McCullough shared information about staffing activities. Mr. Maier shared updates on construction, building improvements and transportation. Ms. Mansmann shared budget updates. Mrs. Lani shared an update about how the Code to the Future program will continue in the Canon-McMillan curriculum even though the program itself did not survive COVID.

The October 28 School Board meeting also included reports from Student Representatives, Kayley Demarest and Nico Colacito. They updated the board on things like the Homecoming Game and the King and Queen that were announced as James Merigo and Ava Galicic. They reported on additional events such as the Jack-O-Lantern Jog occurring at the high school on Saturday, October 30, a clean up event that Mrs. Geist and the Environmental Club were able to participate in on October 9th and how they plan to start holding more blood drives in the future.
