Elementary students at Hills-Hendersonville Elementary showcased what they created with coding at their in-person Epic Build Showcase on Valentine's Day this year. Each grade integrated coding into the curriculum in different ways. They studied block-based coding in Scratch. From first grade to fourth grade they learned about designed projects using three important concepts.
Those concepts included:
sequencing, or the steps of a program;
looping, or actions that repeat; and
conditional, which are true/false statements that trigger an action.
First grade built houses and other structures in their planned community using Lego bricks. Students worked together as part of a team to create their community structures. Working together gave students the opportunity to practice important social-emotional skills such as collaboration, communication, creative thinking and problem solving. They designed and built sturdy structures through sequencing and looping with physical blocks, the Lego bricks. Students also incorporated their coding knowledge into their Lego projects by creating a virtual interior of their structure using Scratch!
In second grade, they used Scratch, block-based coding, to tell four facts about themselves in the “All about Me” project. Second graders created sprites, changed the sprites costumes, and added sounds. Then they used more advanced coding skills to explain the life cycle of a butterfly and shared what they learned about butterflies.
In third grade, the students created Scratch projects that focused on the Three Branches of Government. The sprite traveled around a designated track and “gathered” information about each branch as it went around. They wrote codes that included “if then” statements and forever loops.
In fourth grade, students created a multiplication game using projectile motion. They used looping to make their sprite move by a small amount, over and over again, until they hit their target! They even created their own variable to keep track of the score.
