Canon-McMillan School District’s reading team reached out to local early childhood centers and invited them for an afternoon of discussion related to early childhood education.
The group pictured who presented to their guests are: Director of Curriculum and Instruction Mrs. Grace Lani, Wylandville Principal Shannon Balch, Kindergarten Teacher Carolyn Freeman and the following Reading Specialists: Makenzie Buhman, April Lowden (Co-Department Chairs), Lynn Brunner, Allison Cummings, Lindsay Evans, Amanda Hackett, Danielle Ruffolo, Lynette Stewart, and Georgia Yamalis.
With the goal of sharing skill sets needed for students to be successful with academic standards, each reading teacher presented various topics to those in attendance.
Visitors learned about A Day in the Life of a Kindergartner, the curriculum taught, and the self sufficiency skills needed as a Kindergarten student. Reading teachers expounded on phonemic awareness skills, to include rhyming, onset fluency, blending words, syllables, adding, deleting and substituting words. In addition practice with proper letter sounds and writing skills were emphasized.
Each guest received a number of reading tools and a kindergarten readiness checklist.
According to Mrs. Lani, the district plans to provide similar meetings and trainings in the future; hoping that the continued collaboration will ultimately improve outcomes for students and their families.
