Structured Literacy Program
The District has a complete Structured Literacy Program in place for K-6 grade levels. Our comprehensive reading program will create the necessary strong foundation in literacy to allow our students to be successful at the secondary level and beyond. Grades K-2 are focusing on learning to read through phonics, phonemic awareness and a knowledge building curriculum. In third grade, we shift to reading to learn with a strong base in knowledge building, vocabulary development, spelling and writing. All students perform a reading screening three times a year through fourth grade allowing us to identify reading deficits early and provide the necessary reading intervention. Canon-McMillan is an academic leader in literacy development.
