Workplace safety is a focus of the Canon-McMillan School District. The committee’s mission is to take a critical look at workplace safety while helping to find cost savings. The committee has equal representation from administration and staff, including teachers, transportation personnel, building administrators, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria workers and Administration Building staff. Each committee member receives mandatory training annually.

The safety committee has earned approval from the Department of Labor and Industry as a Workplace Safety Committee. In 2007, the committee earned the PSBA (Pennsylvania School Boards Association) Insurance Trust Safety Award acknowledging the district for its proactive approach to safety/loss control.

The district stays on top of safety issues and concerns using an on-line reporting system and monthly meetings. The meetings are conducted in a different facility each month. At the conclusion of the committee’s formal meeting, a site walk-through is done and a safety checklist is completed for that building. The committee’s findings are then shared with the building principal or supervisor prior to leaving the building. If any safety violation is found, that building is revisited. All major findings have been remedied. The Workplace Safety Committee has now grown to include an Accident Investigation Sub Committee. The Workplace Safety Committee also analyzes Workers’ Compensation claims and looks for ways to avoid future occurrences.

National Ladder Safety Month | March 2023

Every step matters: From step stools to extension ladders, make sure you're putting the right foot forward.

Every year over 100 people die in ladder-related accidents, and thousands suffer disabling injuries. Join the American Ladder Institute (ALI) and participate in National Ladder Safety Month in March. This important month was designed to raise awareness of ladder safety and to decrease the number of ladder-related injuries and fatalities.

What is National Ladder Safety Month?

National Ladder Safety Month, observed in March and spearheaded by the American Ladder Institute (ALI), is the only program dedicated exclusively to promoting ladder safety, at home and work. Each year, tens of thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths are caused by ladder misuse. By providing critical guidelines and raising awareness on safe use, we can help decrease these numbers.

The goals of National Ladder Safety Month are to:

  • Decrease number of ladder-related injuries and fatalities
  • Increase the number of ladder safety training certificates issued by ALI
  • Increase the frequency that ladder safety training modules are viewed on https://www.laddersafetytraining.org/
  • Lower the rankings of ladder-related safety citations on OSHA’s yearly “Top 10 Citations List”
  • Increase the number of in-person ladder trainings
  • Increase the number of companies and individuals that inspect and properly dispose of old, damaged or obsolete ladders
