Canon-McMillan fans were on the edge of their seats throughout the entire playoff game this past Saturday at Mars Stadium. For the past two years, the Big Macs' season came to an end in the semi-final round on that exact field.
After a scoreless first half that saw chances for both teams, Plum's Luke Gildea broke open the scoring off a penalty kick. But less than two minutes later, junior Joseph Fonagy notched his own PK goal to tie the game. Plum's Tyler Kolankowski got the lead back for the Mustang's with a goal that came with 13 minutes left.
The Big Macs, however, would not be denied again. On a free kick from Luke Gladden, Joey Fonagy headed the ball into the net for the tying goal with 5 minutes remaining. Just three minutes later, again on a Gladden free kick following a penalty against Nino Civitate, Owen Maher headed in a rebound for the game-winning goal.
The win sends Canon McMillan to the finals for the third time since their winning appearances in 2012 and 2015.
The championship game will be this Thursday, October 31st at Highmark Stadium at 8:00 p.m. Let's pack the stadium for a blue out! Good luck Big Macs!
