If the first round of Epic Build Showcases from October impressed you then this second round of the Epic Build Showcases must have amazed you even more! The fourth grade keynote speakers (pictured) did a fantastic job at describing things that they and the other grades have learned over the past few months. For example since robots were a big theme for this second round they learned the different kinds of robots like research, military and more. A special thank you goes out to reading specialist Mrs. West for assisting and preparing the keynote speakers with their speeches. Of course another huge thank you to Mrs. Natalie Sanchez, the Code to the Future Instructional Coach for the entire district, for doing a fantastic job with each school!
First graders at Borland Manor learned about sequence, loops and conditionals. They learned how to use logos with stacking instead of overlapping. They picked a building in their community (for example, the police department, the fire station, etc.) and built it using the Legos; then with a partner they coded that same building and had sentences pop up describing what it was used for. For first grader Isla writing the sentences was the hardest part for her. She wrote about the police station. Second graders at Borland Manor learned about Pennsylvania history. They were split into groups and they chose and emblem and their robot would have to do two things – change color and make a sound. For the students pictured – Kinley, Isabella and Owen, the hardest part of this round was getting Milo to land directly on their emblem. In third grade the students’ theme was rocks and minerals. They had to go to the moon or somewhere in space and collect a rock sample to bring back for scientists to identify. For the group of students pictured the hardest part for them was getting their robot to pick up the rock repeatedly. Finally for the fourth graders the theme was the south. They picked a state and/or a landmark in the south and had to explain or describe five things about it. For one student the hardest part about her landmark was coding the carpet.
