Canon-McMillan School District Safety
The Canon-McMillan School District is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students.
The District has invested in many school safety improvements over the past decade. Here are several key areas that were targeted based on recommendations from experts in the field.
-
Upgraded and Increased Video Surveillance: We have replaced and installed security cameras throughout the schools and school district to monitor and record activity. This technology will help us respond swiftly to any potential concerns and ensure a safe environment.
-
Enhanced Access Control: We have implemented a new access control system at all entry points to better manage and monitor who enters and exits the building. This system includes electronic card readers for staff and secure check-in procedures for visitors.
-
Armed Police Personnel: We have multi-year agreements with our three local police forces to provide School Resource Officers in our schools. In addition to the SROs, the police departments provide a visible and proactive presence at our schools each day. These professionals are active police officers, trained to handle various situations and access to State and Federal resources to assist in responding to threats.
-
Safety Drills and Training: Regular safety drills and training are conducted to ensure that all members of our school community are well-prepared to respond effectively in case of an emergency.
-
Emergency Communication Systems: We have emergency communication systems to quickly notify parents and staff in the event of an emergency.
-
Collaboration and Support: The School District has an excellent working relationship with local law enforcement. The collaboration and support provided to the school district is unmatched.
-
New Construction: Over the past 10 years, the district has built or renovated three of the nine schools with another project ready to be bid. When schools are renovated and built, the district utilizes best-practice security designs to reduce risk and vulnerabilities.
-
Policy and Procedures: The School District continues to evaluate current policy and practice and make revisions.
-
Threat Assessment: A district-run team that consists of key individuals is responsible for reviewing potential threats and developing action steps to mitigate any potential harm.
-
Awareness Campaigns: The district continues to promote, train, and reinforce the school community to report potential threats.
