Intentional Use of Technology
Technology continues to play an important role in preparing students for the future and helping them develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. When used intentionally and with a clear purpose, digital technology can be a valuable tool that enhances teaching and learning.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Canon-McMillan is making a strategic shift in how technology is used in our classrooms. For our youngest learners in grades K–2, the district is eliminating student Chromebooks and placing a greater emphasis on hands-on, developmentally appropriate learning experiences. In grades 3-12, we are taking a more balanced and intentional approach to technology use, ensuring that digital tools are used when they meaningfully support learning.
As part of this shift, the district has made a concerted effort to invest in high-quality printed instructional materials and prioritize reading and writing on paper. We value hands-on learning, meaningful classroom discussions, face-to-face interactions and teacher-led instruction, all of which play an important role in keeping students actively engaged in their learning.
This approach is grounded in the work of Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, author of The Digital Delusion, who emphasizes the importance of protecting students’ attention. Reducing unnecessary screen time can help minimize distractions and create classroom environments where students are better able to focus, think deeply and engage with their teachers, classmates and learning.
District administration, led by Superintendent Dr. Taranto, is examining and discussing Dr. Horvath’s research and considering his recommendations as we continue to refine our approach to reducing screen time. Our goal is not to eliminate technology, but to use it thoughtfully and purposefully, ensuring that teaching, learning and meaningful human interaction remain at the center of the classroom experience.
