Borland Manor Kicks Off Code to the Future Epic Build Showcases

coding

It’s that time of year again for our elementary students to showcase what they have created with coding.  These showcases are Canon-McMillan’s Epic Builds.  Families are welcomed to their child’s building to see first-hand how students use coding in their classrooms.

Today, you would have seen a line of parents waiting to get into Borland Manor to see the first of three Epic Build cycles. Mrs. McConnell, principal of Borland Manor, believe the opportunities that computer science bring our students are unlimited.

Each grade integrated coding into the curriculum in different ways.  First grade teachers embedded coding into the science topic of seasons.  Students chose their favorite season and they each described what they liked about it. Mrs. Schutt, 1st grade teacher, indicated that it was especially challenging for her students because they are still learning how to compose complete sentences!

Second grade teachers taught the lifecycle of a butterfly and students used Scratch to code what the lifecycle looked like. Students embedded descriptions of each phase of the life cycle with images, starting with the egg, moving to a caterpillar, to a chrysalis, and then finally to a butterfly.  What a very unique way for students to showcase their complete knowledge of how a caterpillar changes to a butterfly.

Third grade students used a racing game that showcased the differences between urban/ suburban settings and fourth graders brought their personal narratives to life in a game they coded using logic statements and inserted their personal narratives into the game.

Canon-McMillan contracts with Code to the Future who provides the district with a coach, Mrs. Natalie Sanchez, to help with the coding immersion for the entire district. Each showcase kicks off with 4th grade students presenting an overview of the program to the families.  Thanks to Ms. Bethany West for working with this team of students on their presentation skills.

The rest of the elementary schools will be presenting their Code to the Future Epic Build Cycle 1 Showcases on the following days:

  • Tuesday, October 29th at 9:45 a.m. – Wylandville Elementary
  • Thursday, October 31st at 9:30 a.m. – Hills-Hendersonville Elementary
  • Wednesday, November 13th at 8:30 a.m. – Muse Elementary
