Wylandville Elementary Classrooms Extend Fire Safety Learning

2019 Wylandville Fire Prevention Group Picture

The North Strabane Fire Department along with Canonsburg and Cecil Township travel to all of the elementary schools in Canon-McMillan School Districtfor Fire Prevention Week in October.  The students look forward to the program hosted by local firefighters each year and the different additional opportunities that the department offers students in conjunction with that.  This year, Firefighter Travis McVay brought in flyers for a coloring contest that the department was doing to engage local students and schools.  A fun conversation with Wylandville Elementary School secretary, Diane Edwards, turned the coloring contest in to a classroom door decorating contest.

The classrooms had two weeks to plan and organize their ideas for their doors, which were judged on creativity, student involvement, and their message.  Mrs. Edwards said,

"It was a great project that brought the entire school together with some fun competition."

Each class had a unique take on the project and some included an actual fire truck sound when you pressed a button while others reached across an entire hallway.  The judges, Tim Liedl, Fire Captain, Becky Loutsion, school nurse, and Shannon Balch, school principal had a hard time choosing one winning classroom.  Three winners were chosen: Ms. Kelly Sheppard, Mrs. Ashley Surich, and the fourth grade who did a combined door with Mrs. Charlene Rinehart and Ms. Kristy Chavez leading the students to victory.  The winners were excited because the winning classes each receive a ride on the fire truck with all of the bells and whistles.  The first and third grade winners had their rides today and fourth grade is scheduled to claim their prize on Monday, November 18th.

Great job to the entire school for coming together to go above and beyond for Fire Prevention Week!  A special thank you to The North Strabane Fire Department for hosting this fun activity.
