The Merit award is an opportunity for an individual school to be acknowledged for its commitment to music education, and as such, to be selected for the SupportMusic Merit Award. It is a distinction awarded as part of the Best Communities for Music Education survey.

The NAMM Foundation seeks to celebrate and recognize innovative and resourceful music education programs in the United States and those schools and communities that support them.

This is an opportunity for an individual school to be acknowledged for its commitment to music education, and as such, to be selected for the SupportMusic Merit Award.

Dr. Taranto, Canonsburg Middle School Principal is extremely proud of his music education staff,

"I would like to acknowledge Mr. Rush, CMS Band Director; Mr. Schrader, CMS Assistant Band Director; Mrs. Cassell, CMS Choir Director for helping to build a strong music education program.  A special thanks to our supportive Administration and School Board, and our parents who show their value in the arts with their volunteer work for the program.  It is this reason, our students experience a wonderful music education program while at Canonsburg Middle School. This is one more piece of evidence that Canonsburg Middle School and the Canon-McMillan School District values a well-rounded educational experience for our students."

Mr. Rush is thankful to be apart of this program,

"The reputation of the CMS music program has been one of the best in the state of Pennsylvania for the past three decades.  The support and dedication from numerous people have made this Support Music Merit Award possible.  We would like to thank the parents and the band booster organization for all of their support to the music program over the years."

Mr. Schrader echos Mr. Rush and feels blessed to be apart of a school district that is so supportive,

"We are blessed in the Canon-McMIllan School District to have the full support of the School Board, Central Office, and especially our leadership at Canonsburg Middle School.  Dr. Taranto and Mr. Schrag have the philosophy to "educate the whole student" and without their support of lessons, consistent rehearsal time, and trips for our students, our success would be limited."

Finally, Ms. Cassell agrees with the previous comments and wants to thank the students as well,

"We are happy to be recognized as a top school for music education.  We would not be able to do what we do without our dedicated and hard-working students.  Our students like to be challenged and they demonstrate an appreciation for the arts as a significant part of their education."
